Video Repair FAQ: What Can and Can't Be Saved
Honest answers about recoverable damage, lost causes, and the questions that come up most while repairing videos.
Repairing videos raises the same questions over and over. Here are straight answers — including the ones people don’t like hearing.

What it can’t
A file that was overwritten. Once new data has been written on top of the footage, that data is gone. This is why the first rule is always: stop using the device and copy the damaged file immediately.
A video where the recording never actually happened. If the camera stopped before writing frames, there’s nothing to recover. Recovery finds what’s there — it can’t invent what was never recorded.
Garbled audio with no recoverable structure. If the audio frames themselves are damaged beyond reading, you may get picture without sound.
Raw audio with no headers. Some cameras write audio without the standard headers; that audio can’t be located in a damaged file and gets skipped.
Questions people ask most
“Will I lose any footage?” Possibly a few frames at the very end if the file was truncated mid-write. What survives is delivered whole — recovery doesn’t cut corners.

The three rules that decide everything
- Copy first, recover the copy. Never work on the only surviving file.
- Stop writing to the source. Every new file lowers your chances.
- Start today, not after a week of use. The more untouched the data, the better the result.
