Camera, Drone or Dashcam Footage Damaged? Recover It by Source

Where the video came from changes what went wrong and how to fix it. A source-by-source guide to saving your footage.

Your footage is damaged — but where it came from tells you a lot about why, and therefore how to get it back. Here’s the source-by-source playbook.

Camera: power cut or card pulled too early

The failure: recording stops mid-take, or the card comes out a second too soon. The file is usually truncated — the recording simply never finished writing its end-of-file structure.

The fix: copy the file off the card, then run it through Recovery in BeeBackX. If you have any other clip from the same camera, add it as a reference video — it can dramatically improve how much comes back. (Why this helps: see recover a truncated video.)

Prevention: wait for the recording indicator to fully stop before ejecting. Give the camera a few extra seconds after pressing stop.

Drone: card errors after a crash or hard landing

The failure: the drone cut power, the gimbal glitched, or the card took a knock. Files may show wrong durations, freeze mid-play, or refuse to open.

The fix: repair is often enough here — run the file through Repair first. If that can’t open it, try Recovery. Drone footage from the same flight or the same card often makes a perfect reference video.

Prevention: land, then keep the card in the drone until it has fully written its buffer. Copy footage off at the end of the day rather than after every flight.

Dashcam: files from around an incident

The failure: dashcams record in short segments and overwrite old ones. Around an accident, segments can be left in a half-written state.

The fix: copy the whole card before the dashcam overwrites anything. Run the suspect files through Repair; for half-written segments, use Recovery. Because dashcam clips are short, batch repair (the batch workbench) is the efficient route.

Prevention: the clock in the dashcam matters — set it correctly so incident files are easy to find. Eject cleanly when pulling the card.

Phone: app crashed or OS interrupted the recording

The failure: a call came in mid-recording, the app was killed, or the phone ran out of storage. The file is truncated or missing its structure.

The fix: most phone videos repair cleanly. Try Repair; if the file won’t open at all, go to Recovery. A reference video from the same phone helps.

Prevention: keep a few GB of headroom — recording usually stops before the card is truly full, but a phone that fills mid-recording is a common cause of truncation.

Screen recording: the capture was interrupted

The failure: the laptop slept, the app crashed, or the system update interrupted the save. The resulting file often has no usable ending.

The fix: screen recordings repair well because they’re typically simple MP4s. Repair usually restores them; a broken one that won’t open at all can go through Recovery.

The shared rules

Whatever the source:

  1. Copy, don’t move — work on a copy, keep the original untouched.
  2. Stop writing to the card — every new file reduces what can be recovered.
  3. Same-device references — a healthy clip from the same camera is the single biggest recovery upgrade.

Fix the file, keep the memories, and go record the next thing.
